The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) has condemned the recent comments of Wontumi TV broadcaster, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, misleading the public about when the elections will be held next month.
Mr. Asiedu had said on Wontumi FM that the election will be held on two days, December 7 and 8, 2024, during which the electorate will be presented different sets of the thirteen presidential candidates from which to select.
He was subsequently taken into custody by police on grounds of breaching section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
In a statement issued by the NCCE following the development, its Chairperson, Kathleen Addy noted that the presenter’s comments were false and a present ‘threat’ to the country’s constitutional democracy.
“Disinformation is a threat to democracy and we must collectively reject it. The Commission will continue to intensify civic and voter education nationwide to empower citizens with knowledge even as we head to the December, 7 polls and beyond,” she said in the release. Ms. Addy encouraged the public to verify information before sharing it to others.
The NCCE Chair who also thanked the police for their “swift action in handling the matter” urged the public to visit its website and the Electoral Commission’s portal for credible information on the upcoming election less than two weeks away.
