Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of Ghana’s ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has dismissed claims of internal preoccupation with upcoming elections, emphasizing the party’s commitment to national governance and unity.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face program monitored by Kumasimail, Gbande highlighted that the NDC leadership, under President John Dramani Mahama, remains focused on addressing the country’s pressing challenges rather than electioneering.
He said “But am saying that I work with the president, I have not sensed any focus on what is 2028 or what is tomorrow’s election.”
Gbande, who works closely with President Mahama, stated clearly that he has not observed any strategic planning centered on the 2028 elections or any immediate electoral contests.
“That plan will come from President Mahama. He’s the leader of our party. Whatever leadership decides, we will support if it aligns with the interests of the Ghanaian people,” Gbande explained.
He further elaborated on the current priorities of the party’s leadership, “The President has been fully committed to steering Ghana through a complex period of economic and social reset. We all recognize the challenges left behind by the previous administration’s eight years, which have undermined the country’s future prospects.”
Addressing concerns about potential factionalism within the NDC, Gbande was emphatic that the party’s hierarchy will not allow personal ambitions to disrupt collective goals.
“As Deputy General Secretary, my role is to help manage the party effectively. We will not permit individual ambitions, even when they are strong, to fracture the party,” he asserted.
Gbande underscored that the party’s grassroots membership rejects any attempts to prioritize personal gain over the party’s unity and mission.
“The times have changed. We are fully in charge of this party now. The base does not support ambitions that undermine our collective stance. While it is natural and even commendable for the party to nurture ambitious leaders seeking greater opportunities, such ambitions must be managed responsibly to protect the integrity of the NDC,” he concluded.
