The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, has affirmed that the Council is making serious efforts to ensure the National Democratic Congress (NDC) signs the Peace Pact ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The NDC’s national leadership, including the party’s chairman and flag bearer, have provided reasons for their reluctance to sign the pact.
During a media interaction in Greater Accra following the Council’s dialogue with the clergy on the potential threats posed by political prophecies to the country’s security before, during, and after the general elections, Rev. Dr. Gyamfi acknowledged the gravity of the concerns raised by the NDC. He explained that the Council is actively working to address these issues.
Rev. Dr. Gyamfi stated, “The same team that met with the NDC is meeting with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) today, August 27, 2024. We hope that after this meeting, we will see what can be done. We have taken steps to address some of the concerns raised by the NDC and have referred these issues to the appropriate bodies.”
He clarified that while the Peace Council is not directly responsible for all the concerns raised, it has made the necessary referrals to the relevant authorities. “We have spoken to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Electoral Commission, and the Attorney General. We are hopeful that all of them will take up the issues and deal with them accordingly,” he disclosed.
Rev. Dr. Gyamfi also revealed that the Peace Council is currently dealing with a significant number of conflict-related cases. “As of the end of July 2024, we had 703 cases on our desk. Yesterday, another issue arose, so conflict cases keep multiplying,” he said.
These 703 cases include a variety of disputes, such as chieftaincy issues, land litigation, resource conflicts, and others, excluding daily political cases. The Peace Council continues to work diligently to resolve these conflicts, aiming to ensure a peaceful atmosphere leading up to the 2024 elections.
