Lawyers for Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, have filed an emergency application at the High Court seeking to halt his extradition to the United States pending an appeal against a recent court ruling.
The legal team, led by lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, is asking the court to stay the execution of an extradition order granted on July 2, 2026, arguing that Mr. Kumi should not be surrendered to U.S. authorities until his intended appeal and an application for leave to appeal have been heard and determined.
Court documents show that the application seeks an order suspending the High Court’s July 2 judgment, which dismissed Mr. Kumi’s application for a writ of habeas corpus ad subjiciendum. The lawyers are also seeking a stay of the committal order issued by the District Court.
In addition, the application asks the court to restrain the Minister for the Interior, the Attorney-General, the Ghana Police Service acting through INTERPOL, and any other state agency from extraditing, removing or transferring Mr. Kumi into the custody of U.S. authorities until the appellate process is concluded.
The lawyers are further requesting an immediate administrative stay of the judgment and all consequential orders pending the determination of the application, together with any additional relief the court considers appropriate.
Mr. Kumi is the subject of extradition proceedings relating to criminal charges filed against him in the United States.
The High Court is expected to determine whether the extradition process should be suspended while the appeal is pursued.
This version adopts a fresh angle by leading with the emergency legal challenge, maintains a neutral tone, and avoids emphasizing the allegations in the headline while still providing the necessary context in the body.
