The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrew Nana Kwasi, has condemned the recent shooting of a party activist by military personnel during a funeral procession in Nyinahin.
Chairman Nana Kwasi visited the injured activist at the hospital on Friday, April 25, expressing solidarity and calling for justice.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 24, when mourners en route to the Nyinahin cemetery were confronted by soldiers who spotted one of them wearing a military-style camouflage outfit.
An altercation ensued, leading to the fatal shooting of a civilian identified as Akwasi Lala, also known as Kushivi, who died instantly while and injured three others.
Chairman Nana Kwasi, speaking on behalf of Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene who is currently out of the country expressed deep concern over the incident.
He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.
“We cannot allow such acts of violence to go unpunished. The safety and rights of our citizens must be upheld,” he stated.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, is investigating the incident. Preliminary reports indicate that the soldiers attempted to disrobe the mourner wearing the camouflage, leading to the confrontation and subsequent shootings.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Nyinahin Community Mortuary, awaiting autopsy. The police have called for calm and cooperation from the public as investigations continue.
Chairman Nana Kwasi reiterated the NDC’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and deceased to preventing future occurrences of such incidents.
“We stand with the families affected and will do everything within our power to support them and seek justice,” he affirmed.
The NDC has a strong presence in the Ashanti Region, and the party leadership is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the rights and safety of its members and the general public are protected.
