Former flagbearer aspirant and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has issued a strong warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership, cautioning that internal divisions and intimidation threaten the party’s chances in the 2028 general elections.
Addressing national executives at the party’s headquarters, Agyapong stressed that unity is the single most important factor for the NPP’s return to power.
“If the NPP wants to return to power, without unity, we will lose-even if you bring Jesus to lead,” he declared, emphasizing that only fairness and justice can guarantee genuine unity within the party.
Agyapong cited recent incidents where party members and MPs were allegedly threatened for supporting different candidates, describing such actions as detrimental to party cohesion.
“A situation where some executives openly endorse a candidate, but others who do the same are threatened or hauled before disciplinary committees, is unacceptable,” he stated
He specifically referenced an incident in Kumasi, where MPs aligned with him reportedly received threats, warning that such practices would only deepen divisions.
He emphasized “General, I still stand for peace but let me give you one example, the Kumasi incident when I was there, can you believe that the MPs who were with me they call and threatened them, KNUST the same thing the MPs who were there they call and threatened them, i beg you if it continues like that whatever we do we can not get unity so you emphased unity i go for it”.
The outspoken politician rejected the notion that internal competition should breed hostility.
He stressed “We have women who are not even party members insulting others they perceive as opponents. What then is the essence of democracy? We are not enemies. Contesting someone does not make you their enemy. After the contest, we must unite. Yet, while we preach unity, the current trajectory suggests a tough road ahead.”
He concluded by urging party faithful to “stand firm” and uphold the principles of fairness and justice, reiterating that only a united NPP can mount a credible challenge in the 2028 elections.
“Without fairness and without justice it will be very difficult to get everybody on board so I’m pleading with you executives to stand firm i know pressures all over”.
