Deputy secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency Dr. Simon Boateng has discounted assertions that Dr. Bawumia will not sail through another presidential primary based on historic voting patterns of the party.
Addressing party faithful in Mampong, NPP flag bearer hopeful Kenedy Agyapong argued that the party has never given a second chance to a candidate who fared abysmally in presidential elections.
The former Assin Central legislator recounted the fate of Adu Boahen, the party’s 1992 presidential candidate who couldn’t secure the NPP’s nod for a second chance despite his brave exploits in leading the party’s fight for the return of democratic rule in Ghana.
Drawing a contrast, Kenedy Agyapong stated that Nana Akufo Addo and John Agyekum Kuffour were given multiple chances at presidency on the basis of their sterling performance in presidential elections until their eventual victory.
Speaking on the Ultimate Breakfast Show on Ultimate 106.9 FM in Kumasi, Dr Simon Boateng maintained that the NPP’s best bet is in fielding a marketed candidate especially at a time the NDC has to field a fresh face for presidency in 2028.
“We have a candidate who is widely marketed across the country as against the NDC bringing a new candidate. We have one step ahead. Changing Dr Bawumia and going for a new person will mean we would have to start everything all over again,” he alluded.
Dr. Simon Boateng contended that happenings within the John Dramani Mahama administration coupled with the introduction of a one-cedi levy on every liter of fuel purchased, has redeemed the image of the Nana Akufo Addo – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia administration in the eyes of many whom he insisted were deceived.
“A majority of the business community is pro NPP but they misunderstood the policies taken by the NPP government as a result of the prevailing economic conditions. While they voted against us with the assumption that the NDC was coming to do something significantly different the port taxes are still there. They have further imposed these huge taxes on fuel which will affect every businessman,”
“The Ghanaian voter is now enlightened and will be taking decisions juxtaposing issues and candidates. It is prudent for the whole of NPP devoid of any capricious interest, to in one accord, push Bawumia,” he added.
