Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as “Awuche”, the 33-year-old believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, will no longer undergo amputation of his left leg after doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital reviewed his condition and recommended a different course of treatment.
The latest development marks a significant turnaround in Awuche’s medical journey, following earlier reports that amputation had been recommended after he was referred from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu with a severe infection in his left leg.

The update was announced on Saturday by Rafik Mahama, Special Aide to Ghanaian businessman , who disclosed that he had engaged the management and medical team of the Tamale Teaching Hospital on behalf of Ibrahim Mahama after Awuche arrived at the facility a few days ago.
According to Rafik Mahama, doctors conducted a comprehensive reassessment of Awuche’s condition and concluded that his left leg would not be amputated, contrary to the earlier medical recommendation communicated to the family following his referral from the Nalerigu Baptist Medical Centre.
“Following a detailed reassessment by the dedicated medical team at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, after a referral from the Nalerigu Baptist Medical Centre, Awuche’s left leg will not undergo amputation as was earlier communicated to the family,” Rafik Mahama said.
The development comes barely days after Ibrahim Mahama pledged to fully finance Awuche’s medical treatment after Kumasimail reported the young man’s appeal for financial assistance. At the time, Awuche had returned to his home in Gambaga in the North East Region because he could not afford treatment after doctors recommended amputation to save his life.
Ibrahim Mahama subsequently intervened, committing to pay all medical expenses associated with Awuche’s treatment and recovery, effectively removing the financial barrier that had delayed his return to hospital.
Rafik Mahama reiterated that Ibrahim Mahama remains committed to supporting Awuche throughout his treatment.

“On behalf of Mr Ibrahim Mahama, I wish to assure Awuche and his family of our continued support. Mr Ibrahim Mahama remains committed to assisting with his medical care and covering the necessary expenses related to his treatment,” he stated.
He also expressed appreciation to Ghanaians for their concern and solidarity, as well as the management and medical team of the Tamale Teaching Hospital for their dedication to Awuche’s care.
The latest medical assessment has renewed hope for Awuche, whose story has attracted nationwide attention and sparked an outpouring of public support. While his treatment is expected to continue under close medical supervision, the decision to preserve his leg is likely to be welcomed by his family and the many Ghanaians who have followed his ordeal.
Kumasimail will continue to monitor Awuche’s condition and provide updates on his treatment and recovery.
