The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly has secured approval for the construction of mechanised boreholes in four underserved communities following a formal request to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), aimed at improving access to safe drinking water.
The beneficiary communities — Gyaekontabuo, Boatengkrom, Achiase, and Wioso Konkomba — have long struggled with inadequate access to potable water, relying heavily on unprotected streams and rivers. The situation has exposed residents to waterborne diseases and negatively affected health outcomes and livelihoods.
The initiative follows a request submitted by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, on February 12, appealing for support to address the critical water challenges facing the communities.
In the letter, he stressed the urgent need for improved water infrastructure and its importance to public health and socio-economic development.
The proposal also aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Following approval by PURC, a technical team has already visited the beneficiary communities to conduct feasibility studies, marking the commencement of preliminary work on the project.
The mechanised borehole intervention is expected to significantly improve access to clean and reliable water in the affected areas and enhance overall living conditions.
Hon. Sedik reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to prioritising development projects that respond to the immediate needs of residents, noting that improving access to basic services remains central to efforts to promote socio-economic growth in the district.
