The Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen KorKor II, has urged the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to intensify efforts to curb the growing use of foreign currencies in local transactions.
He described the practice as a threat to the integrity of the Ghana cedi and called for stricter enforcement of existing regulations to ensure that the local currency remains the dominant medium of exchange.
The Sunyanimanhene made the call when the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwesi Asiama, and members of the Bank’s Board paid a courtesy call on him at the Nana Bosoma Royal Palace in Sunyani on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen KorKor II commended Dr. Asiama for his leadership and the progress made in stabilising the cedi, compared with previous years.
He, however, cautioned that the increasing use of foreign currencies in everyday transactions could undermine the country’s economic stability.
“No sovereign nation permits another country’s currency to dominate transactions in its local markets,” he noted, urging the Bank of Ghana to enforce regulations governing the use of foreign currencies.
The Paramount Chief also appealed to the Bank to consider Sunyani as a priority beneficiary of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, particularly in the provision of infrastructure and other development projects in the Bono Region.
He further urged members of the Bank’s Board and staff to support the Governor’s vision and work together to advance the institution’s strategic objectives.

According to him, the welfare and motivation of the Bank’s workforce must also remain a priority, as a committed workforce is essential to achieving institutional goals.
Dr. Asiama explained that the delegation was in Sunyani as part of the Bank’s official stakeholder engagements and considered it appropriate to formally introduce the Board and management to the traditional authority.
He said the courtesy call was also intended to seek the wisdom, blessings and counsel of the Sunyanimanhene.
The delegation included First Deputy Governor Dr. Zakari Mumuni, Second Deputy Governor Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, and Board members Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Hon. Isaac Adongo, Dr. Fritz Augustine Gockel, Ms. Nana Akua Ayivor, Ms. Emma Akua Bulley, Mrs. Evelyn Naa Checher Kwatia, Dr. Stephen Senyo Sapati, Ms. Beatrice Feehi Annangfio, Ms. Kizzita Mensah, Mr. Joseph W. Asamoah and Ms. Aimee Vyda Quashie.
The delegation was led in the Bono Region by the Bank’s Bono Regional Manager in Sunyani, Mr. Abdulai Lawal Abubakari.
The Sunyani Traditional Council also honoured Mr. Abubakari with a citation for his dedication to strengthening relations between the Council and the Bank of Ghana.
As part of the traditional hospitality extended to the delegation, the Paramount Chief presented the Bank’s team with 100 tubers of yam, sacks of onions, crates of eggs and a sheep.
He also honoured Dr. Asiama with a traditional cloth and a pair of handcrafted traditional sandals as symbols of respect, appreciation and friendship.
Dr. Asiama expressed appreciation for the gesture and pledged the Bank of Ghana’s continued collaboration with traditional authorities in support of national development.
