The Wenchi Municipal Assembly has overwhelmingly confirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee, Gloria Opoku Gyamfi, as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
Opoku Gyamfi secured 33 out of 41 votes cast by Assembly Members, representing 80.4 percent, thus surpassing the required two-thirds majority.
The confirmation process was supervised by the Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Christiana Opoku.
Prior to the voting, Wenchi Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Gyimah Yakubu, urged Assembly Members to support both the election of a Presiding Member and the confirmation of the MCE nominee to fast-track development initiatives in the municipality.
He emphasized that failure to do so would stall key projects in the area.
In her acceptance speech, Opoku Gyamfi expressed gratitude to President Mahama for appointing her and thanked the Assembly Members for their confidence in her leadership.
She pledged to work collaboratively with the Assembly and relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of government policies and programs.
“I will supervise the day-to-day activities of the Assembly to drive development and improve service delivery,” she stated.
Ahead of the MCE confirmation, the Assembly also elected Hon. Henry Ameworwor, Headmaster of Nchiraa Methodist Basic School and Assembly Member for Pramaso Twiesiase, as Presiding Member. He received 93.18 percent of the votes, securing the two-thirds majority required.
Hon. Ameworwor assured the Assembly of his commitment to working closely with the MCE and other members to initiate and complete development projects that would enhance the living conditions of residents in the municipality.
The Bono Regional Minister, Lawyer Akwaboa Addai, who attended the confirmation ceremony, commended the Assembly Members for endorsing the President’s nominee. He announced that the government would award the Sunyani -Techiman–Wenchi–Wa road project by June this year, as a show of appreciation to the people of Wenchi.
Additionally, he revealed plans to establish two cashew processing factories in Wenchi before the end of his tenure, as part of efforts to boost local industry and create employment.
