MTN Ghana and HMD Global have launched a low-cost 4G smartphone aimed at moving users off 2G devices and expanding access to digital services.
The device, the HMD Arc, is priced at GH¢899 and comes with 2.5GB of monthly data for six months, according to the companies.
A large share of mobile users in Ghana still rely on 2G-only phones, limiting access to services such as mobile banking, online learning and internet-based communication. MTN says the new device is part of efforts to accelerate migration to 4G networks.
Affordability remains a key barrier, particularly for low-income and rural users, where entry-level smartphones are often out of reach.
The HMD Arc supports 4G connectivity and basic smartphone functions, including internet browsing and app usage.
MTN Ghana’s Chief Consumer Officer, Noel Kojo Ganson, said the partnership supports the company’s broader access strategy.
“The collaboration is aligned with MTN Ghana’s long-term strategy of deepening digital access across the country. HMD Global’s reputation for producing durable and accessible mobile devices makes them an ideal partner as we work to enhance connectivity and advance digital inclusion for all,” he said.
HMD’s Commercial Head, Usman Shahid, said the initiative is intended to widen access to smartphones.
“Our partnership with MTN Ghana reflects our shared commitment to expanding 4G access through dependable and accessible devices. Helping more people transition from feature phones to smartphones is a tangible way of driving broader digital participation in Ghana,” he said.
The HMD Arc will be sold at MTN retail centres and selected outlets nationwide.
