Alfred Ababio Kumi, a prominent youth activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former parliamentary aspirant widely recognized as “Adenta Kumi,” has regained his freedom after being held in the custody of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
Kumi’s release came after a series of high-level discussions involving security officials and Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament.
The intervention followed Kumi’s arrest earlier today, May 23, 2025, on charges relating to the publication of false news.
Authorities took Kumi into custody following assertions made both on his X (formerly Twitter) account and during a recent radio interview.
The content in question was tied to a petition he addressed to the President of Ghana, urging the dissolution of the committee responsible for investigating the Chief Justice.
In his petition, Kumi accused certain members of the judiciary of misconduct, arguing that their actions could undermine the integrity of the ongoing inquiry.
He specifically alleged that on May 15, 2025 immediately after the committee’s inaugural sitting Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, the legal representative for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in the Airport Residential Area of Accra.
Kumi further claimed that the group was overheard discussing issues connected to the ongoing petition, sparking concerns about the impartiality of the investigative process.
The allegations made by Kumi have stirred significant debate within political and legal circles, with some commentators calling for greater transparency and accountability within the judiciary.
Others have urged caution, noting the serious nature of accusations against high-ranking judicial figures.
Following his release, supporters of Kumi celebrated outside the NIB headquarters, praising the swift intervention of parliamentary leaders.
