The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for stronger global cooperation towards economic liberation and greater equity for African countries.
Mr Asiedu Nketia made the remarks after participating in the 3rd Standing Committee Meeting of the “For the Freedom of Nations!” Movement hosted by the United Russia Party, where he said Ghana presented its position on countering modern forms of neocolonialism and promoting global fairness.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the NDC Chairman said discussions at the summit combined diplomatic engagement with a broader policy message that true Pan-Africanism cannot be achieved without economic independence.
He argued that decades after Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, warned about the challenges of incomplete independence, many African countries continue to face economic systems and trade structures shaped by external influences.

According to him, Africa must move beyond its traditional role as a supplier of raw materials and become a key player in industrialisation, technology, and value creation.
“Africa can no longer participate in the global economy merely as a supplier of raw materials; we must lead as equal partners in industrial capacity, technology, and value creation,” he stated.
Mr Asiedu Nketia also highlighted the importance of reparatory justice, explaining that the demand is not driven by resentment or an attempt to blame current generations for historical actions, but rather a call for accountability.
He said present global inequalities cannot be separated from historical processes that shaped economic and political relations between countries.
“Meaningful international cooperation simply cannot be separated from the historical processes that shaped today’s inequalities,” he said.
The NDC Chairman stressed that genuine sovereignty requires more than political declarations, arguing that countries must strengthen institutions and governance systems to transform independence into economic reality.
He added that Ghana’s delegation used the engagement to advance discussions through high-level networking, working sessions at the Legislative Assembly and the Hermitage, as well as legal advocacy at the XIV International Legal Forum.
Mr Asiedu Nketia said Ghana remains committed to contributing to international discussions on reparatory justice and economic sovereignty.
He maintained that the pursuit of economic freedom remains an ongoing journey requiring stronger institutions, strategic partnerships and sustainable development approaches.
