The European Union (EU) has joined Ghanaians in mourning the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, describing the late monarch as a distinguished traditional leader whose commitment to peace, reconciliation and unity left an enduring mark on the Dagbon Kingdom and Ghana.
In a statement issued following the death of the revered King, the EU expressed solidarity with the people of Dagbon and the nation, acknowledging the profound loss occasioned by the passing of one of Ghana’s most respected traditional rulers.
“The European Union joins the people of Dagbon and Ghanaians to mourn the passing of the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II,” the statement said.
The EU praised the late Yaa-Naa for his wisdom, statesmanship and unwavering dedication to promoting peace at a time when the Kingdom was consolidating reconciliation and stability.
According to the statement, the King’s leadership played a pivotal role in strengthening unity within Dagbon, leaving behind a legacy that would continue to inspire generations to come.
“His Majesty will be remembered for his wisdom, statesmanship and steadfast commitment to peace and reconciliation. His leadership was instrumental in fostering unity and stability in Dagbon, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations,” the statement noted.
The European Union also extended its heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, as well as the entire nation, as Ghana mourns the passing of the revered traditional leader.
“We extend our condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians during this time. May His Majesty rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
The tribute from the European Union adds to a growing list of messages from diplomatic missions, traditional authorities, political leaders, business executives and other dignitaries honouring the life and legacy of Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II.
The late Overlord, who ascended the Skin of Dagbon in January 2019, is widely credited with strengthening peace, fostering reconciliation between the royal gates and promoting stability across the Dagbon Kingdom during his reign.
His passing has been widely described as a significant loss not only to Dagbon but also to Ghana’s traditional leadership and national cohesion.
