The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has announced that three major infrastructure projects underway at Nabango Senior High School will be completed within 18 months.
He urged the community to support the contractor to ensure timely delivery and cautioned against pilfering of materials, stressing that such practices could compromise the quality and pace of work. He also encouraged the contractor to engage local labour from the Nabango area to promote community participation and economic benefit.
The projects, which fall under the GETFund’s new targeted interventions, include; two-storey 12-unit classroom block A, 12-unit classroom block B and a dining hall with a kitchen.
The Minister conveyed the President’s appreciation to the people of Nabango for their support during the elections and reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure in the area. He further pledged to work towards securing boarding status for the school.
Touching on concerns raised about electricity, he emphasised its importance to socio-economic development and assured that the community would be considered under the rural electrification programme.
He also extended the President’s best wishes to the school’s WASSCE candidates and advised the community to properly document lands allocated to the school to prevent future disputes.
Earlier, the Headmistress, Clemecia Zizinga, highlighted the longstanding infrastructural challenges facing the school. She explained that the school started as a private institution in 2010 and became government-assisted in 2016, but has since seen little development.
She appealed for urgent support in areas such as student dormitories, a dining hall, a headmaster’s bungalow, toilet facilities, staff accommodation, and a perimeter fence wall. She lamented that the school had been neglected for years, revealing that intervention from the Regional Minister was necessary before the school could obtain basic furniture.
Despite these setbacks, she noted that the school continues to maximise its limited resources. However, she disclosed that many students posted to the school often decline admission, forcing authorities to actively scout for students to maintain enrolment.
The District Chief Executive for Kasena-Nankana West, Hon. Stephen Akurugu A-eke, attributed the ongoing developments to the uncapping of the GETFund, which has made more resources available for educational infrastructure. He expressed appreciation to the government for responding to the school’s needs and assured that efforts are underway to secure boarding status for the institution.
The representative of the Chief of Nabango, Naba Atuguba Ben Atogumzoeya II, commended the government for the projects and called for their swift execution. He also appealed for the fencing of the school to enhance security.
