The Ghana Police Service has formally invited Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist with an ongoing investigation into an alleged assault on a police officer during the May 5 “Save the Judiciary” demonstration in Accra.
This follows a review of multiple video footages circulating online, which appear to show the MP involved in a physical altercation with a uniformed officer.
In a press statement , the Police Service stated that it has written to the Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Afenyo-Markin to facilitate his cooperation with the investigation.
“The Service has written to the Right Hon. Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist ongoing investigation into the alleged incident”.
Also, the police officer implicated in the incident will also be part of the inquiry to provide his account.
“The officer in question will also be assisting the investigation”.
The demonstration, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) alongside other opposition groups, was organized to protest the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama, an act the protesters deem politically motivated and unconstitutional.
