The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling drug abuse and illicit trafficking as part of efforts to protect citizens and strengthen national security.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, the Interior Minister said he joined the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, and other government officials in Accra to commemorate the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The event highlighted the government’s determination to address the growing threat posed by drug abuse and its impact on public health, security, and the well-being of communities across Ghana.

Delivering the government’s statement at the commemoration, Hon. Julius Debrah described drug abuse as an emerging public health and national security challenge, stressing the need for a collective approach involving state institutions, communities, parents, faith-based organizations, and young people.

He called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to confront the menace and develop effective preventive measures to reduce the impact of drug abuse on society.
Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak stated that, as Interior Minister, he remains committed to strengthening law enforcement, improving national security measures, and supporting preventive and rehabilitative programmes aimed at addressing drug-related challenges.

He said under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government is focused on building a safer, healthier, and drug-free Ghana where citizens can achieve their full potential.

“Together, we will win the fight against drug abuse through unity, vigilance, and decisive leadership,” the Minister said.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote global action against illicit drug production and trafficking.
