The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a clarification regarding remarks made by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (Mayor of Kumasi), Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, during an interview with investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni on sanitation management in the metropolis.
In a statement released on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Assembly said the interview covered a wide range of issues, including street sweeping, sanitation financing, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) sanitation module, and the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
According to the KMA, the Mayor explained that the Assembly previously had more than 580 street sweepers under the YEA sanitation module but is currently operating with only 102 sweepers. He noted that the significant reduction in personnel has made it difficult for the Assembly to maintain daily street sweeping across the metropolis.
The statement also clarified the Mayor’s comments on the remuneration of the Assembly’s current street sweepers. It said his reference to the GH¢800 monthly allowance paid to KMA-engaged sweepers was intended solely to provide information on their current remuneration.
The Assembly stressed that the Mayor did not compare the current allowances paid by the KMA with salaries or allowances previously paid under the Zoomlion-managed YEA sanitation module. It described any interpretation suggesting such a comparison as inaccurate and inconsistent with the Mayor’s remarks.
The KMA further stated that the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) contract between the Assembly and Zoomlion Ghana Limited remains valid and operational.
On sanitation financing, the Mayor explained that the statutory allocation of 10 percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund earmarked for sanitation is insufficient to address the growing sanitation challenges facing Kumasi. He noted that managing sanitation in a city the size of Kumasi requires significantly greater financial resources than the current allocation provides.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to improving environmental sanitation through collaboration with stakeholders despite existing financial and operational constraints.
It also thanked residents for their continued understanding and support, assuring the public that it remains committed to keeping Kumasi clean.
