The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to stage its nationwide “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration today, Thursday, August 6, in Accra, as the opposition party intensifies its campaign against what it describes as growing political persecution, selective justice and the abuse of state institutions.
The protest, which is expected to attract thousands of party supporters, executives and sympathisers from across the country, is aimed at defending the rule of law, constitutional governance and democratic accountability, according to the party.
The NPP says the demonstration is intended to draw national attention to what it considers a worrying trend of actions that undermine Ghana’s democratic institutions and constitutional order.
Among the party’s key concerns is the acquittal and discharge of former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe Attionu. The NPP argues that the development raises questions about the consistency, fairness and impartiality of the country’s justice system.
The party is also protesting what it describes as the arbitrary arrest, detention and alleged harassment of some of its members by state investigative and security agencies.
According to the NPP, these actions are politically motivated and constitute attempts to intimidate members of the opposition.
The demonstration is scheduled to commence at the forecourt of the Supreme Court in Accra, where party leaders will present a petition to the leadership of the apex court.
The petition is expected to outline the party’s concerns over recent judicial decisions and call for stronger safeguards to protect judicial independence and uphold the rule of law.
Following the presentation of the petition, demonstrators will embark on a peaceful march through selected principal streets of the capital before proceeding to the Jubilee House.
At the Presidency, the NPP leadership will submit a second petition urging President John Dramani Mahama to address what the party describes as increasing attacks on democratic institutions and to ensure that state agencies operate independently, fairly and without political interference.
The party insists that the demonstration goes beyond partisan interests and is intended to safeguard Ghana’s democratic values, constitutional freedoms and the rights of all citizens.
Meanwhile, security agencies are expected to deploy personnel along the protest route to maintain law and order, regulate traffic and provide security for demonstrators and the general public throughout the exercise.
