The Greater Accra Regional Security Council, in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and the Tema West Municipal Assembly, has commenced a three-day demolition exercise within the golf course area of a Ramsar site in the Greater Accra Region.
The operation is targeting unauthorized structures encroaching on protected wetlands and waterways, which authorities say pose significant environmental risks and contribute to flooding in nearby communities.
Speaking to the media during the exercise, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo issued a strong warning to developers and landowners, stressing that the government will not tolerate illegal construction on waterways.
“We are here to protect. This exercise is in collaboration with all stakeholders, including the Forestry Commission and traditional authorities. We engaged all parties before commencing this operation,” she said.
She cautioned the public against acquiring land in protected areas, particularly within Ramsar zones, describing such investments as risky and unlawful.
“Why would you invest in an illegal site, knowing that at some point authorities will take action? This should serve as a warning to others,” she added.
The minister also expressed concern that some previously demolished structures had been rebuilt, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement.
Officials say the demolition exercise will continue over the next three days, with all structures within the core protected zone expected to be cleared as part of efforts to enforce planning regulations and safeguard critical ecological areas.
