A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Frank Osei Bonsu, has attributed the party’s electoral defeat in the 2024 general elections in part to internal sabotage and the spread of unfounded allegations among party members.
Analyzing the internal dynamics that undermined the Akufo-Addo administration, Dr. Osei Bonsu cited the circulation of false accusations against Francis Asenso-Boakye, the former Minister for Works and Housing, as a case in point.
According to Dr. Osei Bonsu, a baseless allegation made by former Assin Central MP, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, accusing Asenso-Boakye of authorizing the questionable sale of government housing units, caused serious reputational damage.
The claim, he noted, was widely circulated, despite being entirely unfounded.
“In reality, Hon. Asenso-Boakye was firmly opposed to such transactions,” Dr. Osei Bonsu emphasized.
“He consistently resisted pressure from vested interests and instead championed the redevelopment of government properties to expand the housing stock for public servants a position his successor, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has continued to uphold.”
What worsened the situation, he said, was the failure of party leadership to publicly defend Asenso-Boakye or challenge the false narrative.
The silence, Dr. Osei Bonsu argued, left the door open for misinformation to spread unchecked, until the Judicial Service of Ghana—typically reserved in political matters issued a rare public clarification to correct the record.
Dr. Osei Bonsu warned that the party’s inability to manage internal discipline and counter harmful misinformation severely undermined public confidence.
“These internal fractures provided political opponents with powerful ammunition and weakened the NPP from within,” he said.
He explained that the party’s 2024 loss was not merely the result of external political competition but also a consequence of internal betrayal, poor communication, and a failure to protect the integrity of its own members.
“It is a painful lesson,” he added, “but one that must lead to greater unity, discipline, and commitment to the truth going forward.”
