The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has given owners and occupiers of shops in the metropolis 14 days to remove unauthorized canopies, awnings, sheds and other structures erected at the frontages of their premises.
In a public notice dated August 10, 2026, the Assembly directed affected shop owners and occupants to voluntarily remove the structures and restore the affected areas to their original condition.
According to the KMA, the unauthorized structures obstruct pedestrian movement, encroach on public spaces and road reserves, and create environmental and safety hazards. The Assembly said the structures also detract from the orderly development and appearance of the metropolis.
The notice warned that owners who fail to comply within the stipulated 14-day period could have the structures removed by the Assembly without further notice.
It added that the cost of removing the offending structures would be borne by the owners or occupants. Offenders could also face prosecution under applicable laws and regulations governing physical planning and development control.
The Assembly has urged affected persons to cooperate with the authorities to help maintain a safe, accessible, clean and orderly urban environment.
For further information or clarification, affected persons have been directed to contact the Physical Planning Department of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly during official working hours.
The notice lists Pln. Benjamin Agyeamin-Boaten, Head of the Physical Planning Department, as the contact person.
