The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Patrick Yaw Boamah, is calling for the immediate reopening of Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., following its closure over a suspected case of corruption.
The embassy was shut down by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who cited the need for a thorough investigation into allegations that a fraudulent link had been embedded in the embassy’s official online portal, redirecting clients to a private company.
As part of the shutdown, all staff members at the embassy have reportedly been asked to vacate their posts.
Addressing the media in Parliament, Mr. Boamah criticized the decision, stressing that the closure was unnecessary and could have been avoided.
“This issue could have been handled without shutting down the embassy and denying clients access to essential consular services,” he said.
He urged the Foreign Affairs Minister to exercise tact in managing the situation to safeguard the country’s diplomatic interests and the reputation of the mission abroad.
The MP’s comments come amid growing public interest in the integrity of Ghana’s foreign missions and the government’s approach to rooting out corruption within the public sector.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry has yet to respond to Mr. Boamah’s call or provide a timeline for the reopening of the embassy.
