The government has announced 267.52 kilometres of new road projects for the Upper East Region under the Big Push infrastructure programme, with construction expected to begin within months.
The Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Governs Agbodza, said the package covers 18 projects aimed largely at opening up farming communities, improving access to markets and social services, and strengthening connections between districts.
Mr Agbodza announced the projects on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Desert Pastures in Bolgatanga during a stakeholders’ engagement as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Tour of the region.
He said the allocation represented a major increase over the 50 to 60 kilometres previously assigned to the region under some road programmes.
“Big Push is not only about trunk roads,” the Minister said, explaining that President Mahama had directed that the programme should also target feeder roads serving rural communities and agricultural production areas.
Authorisation for the projects, he said, would be issued next week to trigger procurement, with contractors expected to be mobilised to various sites within the following month.
Key projects
The package includes the upgrading of the Gurumongo-Mayoro, Gbedema-Kandiga and Y-Junction-Domeabra-Tempane feeder roads, as well as rehabilitation of the Saboro-Wusunga, Catholic-Kpandem-Health and Basyonde-Kongo roads.
Other projects include the Chuchuliga-Awulansa, Kandiga Junction-Sirigu, Zaare Market-Zeseri, Yakubu Corner-Kpatia, Asonge-Perlungu, Bongo Central-Namoa Border, Zebilla Hospital-Tanga and Zebilla SHS Junction-Kukore roads.

The programme also covers the Zaare-Nyariga-Ayonore, Zuarungu-Tongo, Bawku-Narungu, Pusiga township and Navrongo-Pungu-Natungnia roads.
Two steel bridges are also planned along the Paga-Sirigu route—a 30-metre structure over the Kolalibali River and a 36-metre bridge over the River Gugura.
Several roads in the Bawku area, including Asorekobisi Guinea Fowl Junction-Nyariga Canal, Extee-Azimson Bypass, Azorebisi-Nyariga Junction, Magori-Gentriga, Mogoni-Tampizua, Sakpare-Chief Palace and Nidi-Naranzua, are also included.
Major corridors
Mr Agbodza said the government was simultaneously pushing ahead with major road corridors in the region.
Work on the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu road is progressing, while contractors have returned to the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road, which stalled after 2016. Government is targeting completion of the latter by 2027.
The Minister also announced plans to rehabilitate and reconstruct the heavily deteriorated Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, which he described as unsafe for motorists.
Sections of the Eastern Corridor around Nakpanduri, Garu and Kulungugu are also earmarked for major rehabilitation.
The projects form part of the government’s broader road infrastructure programme aimed at improving connectivity, facilitating the movement of farm produce and goods, and linking communities to markets, schools and health facilities across the Upper East Region.
