Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee and MP for Assin South, has urged President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency to address Ghana’s worsening illegal mining crisis.
Speaking on Mana Nkomo Morning Show on Mana Radio today, the lawmaker warned that failure to act decisively would lead to irreversible environmental and economic consequences.
Fordjour criticized Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah to implement concrete measures rather than organizing“emotional press conferences”.
He said “Our water bodies are destroyed, cocoa farms are being cut down, and forests are decimated. Instead of halting all small-scale mining until we find lasting solutions, the government is pumping money into buying gold from these same activities,” he asserted
The legislator added “We must declare a state of emergency, not a state of ministerial cry”.
Fordjour accused the Armah Buah of hypocrisy, stating, “You used galamsey to campaign in opposition. Now as minister, you hold press conferences to cry. Is the job beyond you?”.
